These days, the reality of human trafficking is hitting us from every angle. According to a recent study published in the Akron Law Review, 25% of trafficked persons in the US are within the state Texas and almost a third of the calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline are from Texas. Sadly, Houston is a hub for trafficking within our state.
The trauma experienced by victims of human trafficking is compounded by the trauma of abortion. Sadly the two go hand in hand. A study published in the Annals of Health Law of the survivors of trafficking found that the majority had at least one abortion, and many had multiple. Up to 88% of these women said they had been in contact with health care workers, but had not been asked if they had been coerced into sexual activity or abortion.
LaNora Purvis, founder of Heaven’s Army, answered God’s call to help these women. She shares that almost all whom she has helped rescue from trafficking have experienced abortions. One of her clients stopped counting at 12 abortions. LaNora will talk about this link and about the wonderful work that Heaven’s Army does. Kendra and Tiffany, two young women whom LaNora helped rescue, will share their personal experiences.
Although this meeting will focus on two of the worst forms of dehumanization perpetuated upon women and the unborn, Tiffany and Kendra’s stories of resiliency and restoration will also inspire and challenge us to know that both travesties, abortion and trafficking, can be ended.
