“Snowflake Babies” – Care and adoption of frozen IVF embryos

Snowflakes babies is a termed coined to describe the over half a million frozen embryos who are stored in cryogenic containers in fertility clinics as the “extras” of IVF treatment.

Currently only 1 state, Louisiana, confers personhood protection to these children.

Some sources estimate that there are about 2 million couples currently waiting to adopt in the United States.  Could some of these couples provide the opportunity for life that these unborn children deserve?  What are the rights of the snowflake babies?  What protections should we as a society offer them?

Rhea and Shannon Robison will share their story of adopting 4 of their 8 children via embryo adoption.

In 1997 Nightlight Christian Adoptions pioneered the first embryo adoption program, Snowflakes Embryo Adoption offering this unique adoption choice to families.  The Robisons  first adopted through the Snowflakes program with Nightlight Christian Adoptions in 2010.  The Robisons’ daughter, Sarah, was frozen almost 12 years before she was adopted.  Sarah was not considered to be a very “viable” embryo but she is now a thriving 5 year old!

The Robisons later adopted their triplets through the National Embryo Donation Center.  Although the two girls are biologically related, their brother is actually not – although he made the journey to life with his sisters.  The Robisons definitely have a very unique family history to share.

Shannon states,

“We are passionate about sharing with others about embryo adoption & the process of giving these frozen lives an opportunity to continue growing.”

In addition to the Robisons, local attorney, Maureen Ball, will help us understand the legal position of frozen embryos in Texas.  Maureen became aware of the issues concerning frozen embryos while handling a post-divorce matter in Montgomery County.

This is a topic of growing concern.  Don’t miss this important meeting! Please invite others.
